Move to a PC
All documents need to be moved to a PC and tested using the PAC 2024 Checker and a screen reader such as the JAWS Reader.
Unfortunately, the testing software is not made for Mac.
Some users run Windows Parallels but this can have drawbacks for certain Mac computers, so a separate PC may be helpful.
Test with the PAC Checker
The Check Document for Accessibility Script and the Acrobat Accessibility Checker do not test documents against PDF/UA criteria.
The only checker that tests against the criteria for AA complaint, accessible documents is the PAC 2024 Checker. The checker is free but the full version only works on PC. The online PAC Checker works on MAC but is not as robust as the PC desktop application.
If you set the PDF/UA Entry on your documents, they must pass the PAC 2024 checker and a manual test to confirm they are accessible. It is untrue to state the document is PDF/UA compliant if it is not.
Listen with a Screen Reader
JAWS Reader is the best way to ensure your document reads properly for all users. It is free for UTA users and runs on PC.
Listen to JAWS read an accessible PDF made with InDesign.
NVDA Reader is also free and runs on PC.
Automated checkers are not a substitute for humans – they can only spot the things they are programmed to spot. Listening with a screen reader helps ensure your documents read fluidly and coherently, like an audiobook or a podcast, and that there are no barriers for users with disability.
